The cameras people regret are the battery ones that miss the event and the cloud ones that stop working when the subscription lapses. We install wired PoE systems that record locally and keep recording.
A wired camera has power and data over one Cat6 run, so there are no batteries to charge and no gaps while a battery unit wakes up and decides whether something is worth recording. Footage lands on a local recorder you own, which means no monthly fee and no third party deciding how long your video is kept.
Coverage planning matters more than resolution. Four cameras placed to cover approach paths, entry doors and the driveway beat eight cameras pointed at the middle of a lawn. We walk the property first and lay out sight lines before anything is mounted.

Planning that actually matters
- Cover approach paths and entry points, not decorative sight lines
- Mount high enough to be out of reach, low enough to capture faces
- Watch for headlight and porch-light glare washing out night footage
- Size storage to the retention you actually want, usually 14 to 30 days
- Keep cameras on their own VLAN, away from the rest of the network
Common questions
Wired or wireless cameras?
Wired, in almost every case. Battery cameras miss events while they wake, and need regular charging. A PoE camera runs continuously on a single cable.
Is there a monthly fee?
Not with the systems we install. Footage records to a local recorder you own. You can add off-site backup if you want it, but nothing is gated behind a subscription.
How many cameras do I need?
Most homes are well covered by four to six, placed at approach paths and entries. We walk the property and map sight lines before quoting.
Can I view them from my phone?
Yes, from anywhere, and we set up remote access securely rather than exposing the recorder to the open internet.
